Mud Room Storage Lockers

It seems like it's been awhile since I've given you a lake house here it is! We are wrapping up another round of renovations, and included in this round was the mud room. We waited until the end to refinish this room because with all the chaos going on in the rest of the house, it was nice to have a 'dumping ground' for our stuff we hadn't yet found an official spot for. I was actually a bit apprehensive to redo this room because that meant I may actually have to get organized (yikes)! However, now that it is nearing completion, I am so thrilled with the way it turned out that I am actually excited to get organized and make the room 'pretty'. Because lets be honest, decorating is the best part! There are still a couple finishing touches yet to be completed, however I want to share with you the custom storage lockers. I know I'm starting to sound a bit like a broken record when I say this, but a final reveal of the entire room is coming soon! As for now, here's a teaser of just one corner.

Let's start with the 'Before' picture.

Believe it or not, this picture was actually taken on a 'good' day. You can tell by the lack of clutter piled up. You think I'm joking, but I'm not! I would also like to think that because the vacuum is just sitting in the middle of the room, that meant I just vacuumed, but that's highly doubtful. Like I said, this room was just an oversized storage area so I probably put it there thinking that was a good home for it. Anyways, let's focus on that right corner, shall we? That's the future home of the storage lockers.

I should probably mention that before we built the custom storage unit, we took care of the million other issues this room was flooring, repair the drywall, fix the ceiling, etc. I'll save all those details for later, but here's a picture to give you a rough idea.

After looking through endless photos on and Pinterest, we came up with a general style we liked and would fit the space. We then worked with our carpenters who turned our vision into a reality. We've worked together long enough by now that we can simply show them a picture and they run with it, only really needing to collaborate on the details of the design. It's like magic!

It was pretty crazy watching the way everything came together like a puzzle.

Until finally, the puzzle was complete!

Who would have guessed this space could look so lovely?!

So let's talk details...We went with a beadboard backing for the entire section. This feature helps to give the space a little texture and interest.

In order to get the rounded edges for the benches, we used stair treads.

And how great are the storage baskets?! The wicker baskets came from World Market and the rugby striped baskets came from The Container Store. I may not be able to tell you what's in each basket, but they sure do look nice!

One thing I love to do when decorating is mixing old with new. I found this vintage bottle crate at a local store by our lake house and knew it'd be perfect for this space. It came with cobwebs and all!

And don't worry, beach towels are ready, just waiting for those 80 degree days!

I know having this space will really help us keep our sanity, especially when the house fills up with guests in these upcoming Summer months.... which means more time for me to sit on the back porch relaxing with a glass of wine!
