Inventory Update

Inventory Update

I'm not sure how it happened, but apparently I blinked and five months have gone by since I've last written a blog post! Don't worry, all is well over here, and I still have a pulse. So what's been going on? Well, priorities have shifted a bit but work is still humming along. I'm learning how to manage both running a business and being a mom (while still finding time for myself). I've come to terms with the fact that it takes a good two hours of packing up before attempting to leave the house with a baby, and I now travel with a four bag minimum. You'd think with all that baggage, I'd be prepared for whatever occasion may arise, but what's most astonishing is there's probably only a 50% chance that I may actually have a spare diaper in any of those bags (mom of the year over here!). But, guaranteed I will have at least two tape measures and a handful of Home Depot receipts floating around my purse. That counts for something, right?!

Well it's been a bit of a whirlwind over here these past couple weeks. After anxiously awaiting her arrival, and really starting to question if she was ever going to come, we welcomed Hannah Elizabeth into our lives December 5th, 10 days past her due date. She has since stolen our hearts and we are truly enjoying getting to know her and watching her change and grow each day.

Hardware Sources

Hardware Sources

It never ceases to amaze me how a little bit of paint can completely transform a piece of furniture. However, as dramatic of a change as it may produce, sometimes it's just not quite enough. I'll look at a piece and it will still seem a bit 'off'. This is when I know it still needs some fine tuning, and in most cases, that means updating the hardware. New hardware can have just as powerful of an effect as a rich coat of lacquer and can make a dated piece of furniture look fresh and modern. The biggest downside of new hardware often times is that it can come at a steep price. I get a lot of questions from readers/customers wanting to know my hardware sources. So, I thought I'd share some of my favorite sources with you today.

Color Crush: Navy Blue

Color Crush: Navy Blue

It's no secret that I am slightly obsessed with blue & white decor. This personal taste of mine often times flows over into my work, and I find myself redoing A LOT of pieces in various shades of blue. If you remember back to the beginning of the year, I even declared that navy is the new black. Well, I can say that it's now August, and I've stuck to that trend and it's still going strong over here! Since I don't share as many furniture makeovers anymore, I thought I'd focus today on all makeovers navy and reasons why I'm such a huge fan.

Louis Blue Entryway Table

Louis Blue Entryway Table

It's been quite some time since I've done a furniture project for myself, but last week the opportunity struck, and I took advantage of it. We were up at the lake over a cold, rainy weekend which meant we were restricted to indoor activities. Kyle was suddenly motivated again to start a new home renovation project, so there was no way I was going to interfere with that! You know what they say, "Let a sleeping dog lie." So, that left me with finding my own rainy day project. That's when I decided to turn my attention to our entryway table.

Red Painted Buffet

Red Painted Buffet

Some days I feel like I've been at this painting furniture thing for long enough now that it should all begin to look the same. However, that couldn't be further from the truth. I am continually amazed by each furniture makeover, and even more impressed by the new techniques and styles my team continues to achieve. While a lot of these makeovers tend to fall into the same pattern, this recent buffet was a bit outside the box, and left me inspired to push the envelope even more.

Tips & Tricks of the Trade

Tips & Tricks of the Trade

It's hard to believe, but it's been a bit over two years since I've started my business. Seriously, where has the time gone?! Over the course of these two years, I've gained a lot of knowledge and have picked up a good deal of valuable information, making the physical part of this business a heck of a lot easier. Not that it took much; I was a bit of a novice when I started this whole gig! I cringe when I look back at some of the techniques I used to do and how painfully time consuming and laborious they were. You may get to the same result in the end, but when you can do it in half the amount of time, that means happy hour can get started even earlier, and that, my friends, is called working smarter, not harder. I thought I'd share a couple of these little tricks and tips with you today. For any of you out there who also enjoy refinishing furniture, you may find this post useful. Or, you're already ahead of the game and this is nothing but common sense to you.

You may have noticed over the past several months my blogging has taken a nose dive. What I once did religiously every Friday without fail has now dwindled down to twice monthly...if I'm lucky. Rest assured, I'm not sitting around over here with this sudden new found time on my hands. There's several reasons for the decrease in blogging, and I feel that as a reader, you deserve to know what's going on. First, I'm starting to put more focus on other parts of my business...like that parts that actually make money. Yeah, it's an important one. Furniture sales in my Etsy shop have continued to grow every quarter and it's now at the point where managing the shop is taking up the majority of my time.  Second, if you follow me on Instagram, you've probably noticed the style of my furniture has evolved and a lot more of the pieces I'm creating are professionally sprayed with a lacquer finish. Honestly, I could blog about each and every one of these makeovers, but I think it'd get pretty boring and monotonous. However, if you're itching to see all the furniture I've been cranking out over here, my Instagram account is full of it!

Grey Changing Table

Grey Changing Table

It's hard to believe, but it's been just over two years since I quit my 'day job' and dove into this new venture of refinishing furniture, blogging, decorating, etc. It took a bit of time to clean out all those cobwebs on the right side of my brain and flip the creativity switch on, but after two years, I think I'm going at full force. There are even some days that when asked what I do, I respond, "Oh, I'm an artist." Yeah...that may be a bit of a stretch, but I like to try it out for size. :) Over these past two years, I've also learned a lot about my customers. Who they are, what they like, buying tendencies, preferences...all that good stuff that I could probably analyze, create into graphs and charts, and report on...if only I still used the left side of my brain! Although I may not have a bar graph to prove this, I have learned a lot of my customers are expecting moms shopping for their baby's nursery. Since this demographic comprises such a large percentage of my customer base, I figured it was about time to market my pieces towards this group of people.

Traditional Navy Dresser

Traditional Navy Dresser

These past two weeks have been busy busy in the studio. We've had a lot of custom pieces for clients that have taken up a good portion of our time, however have managed to squeeze out a couple pieces that have actually made their way into my Etsy shop. This dresser is the latter of the two...for now anyways.

My $10 Craigslist Chair

My $10 Craigslist Chair

One of the perks (or challenges...depending on how you look at it) is that I am constantly shopping for new furniture. The benefit of this job is that I see a lot of really cool stuff, often times at dirt cheap prices. The drawback of this job is that I see a lot of really cool stuff, often at dirt cheap prices...and I have a hard time saying no. I'm telling you, when the auctioneer sees me walk into the weekly auction, he knows he's going to have a good night! But it's not all bad. In this process of picking up a lot of random items (some of which I've regretted soon after), I've also scored some really great pieces.

White Hutch Makeover

White Hutch Makeover

Oh hey, guys! Remember me?! Yeah...it's been awhile, I know. When it comes to blogging, I've been Summer breakin' it with the best of them. However, I haven't totally slid into Summer break mode. It's been heating up in the studio, literally and figuratively. Yes, 90º and no A/C makes for long, hot days. Things are heating up in other ways as well, but more to come on that later!

Today, I want to share with you a project I just finished for myself, a dining hutch. It had been sitting in my inventory for quite some time, not really knowing what I wanted to do with it. And then it hit me, this piece would be perfect in our home! We are currently working on decorating the front room of the lake house. When we opted against building built-in shelving along one wall, I knew this hutch would be a pretty and cost effective alternative.

Factory Cart Coffee Tables

Factory Cart Coffee Tables

If you've been following me since the very beginning, like waaay back, these factory carts may sound vaguely familiar to you. If not, you can catch up on all the details here. Over the past two years, my collection of factory carts has slowly been dwindling down. The biggest challenge with refinishing these carts is the mess they make, requiring me to work outdoors, weather permitting. Actually, that's probably the second biggest challenge. Getting motivated to refinish these carts is definitely more of a battle. It requires a good week of giving myself a pep talk, telling myself I can be rewarded with a massage and wine afterwards, and maybe (just maybe) we'll have our garage back at the end of this so we can quit parking our car in the driveway.

Two Colors - Two Ways: Old Ochre & French Linen

Before I dive into my color lesson for the day, I want to take a quick minute to thank Remodelaholic. Several months ago I submitted an article to them sharing the details of our kitchen makeover (you can see my original post here). They responded back a couple weeks ago informing me they will be featuring the renovation project on their site. Woo-hoo! If you're not familiar with Remodelaholic, they have TONS of great ideas regarding home related topics, everything from minor home remedies to full-scale renovations Be sure to hop on over to check it out. Pretty cool stuff!

Ok, now onto a little bit of painting goodness. This past week I finished up two pieces using the same color scheme.

Old White Antique Cabinet

Old White Antique Cabinet

I'm not quite sure where the time has gone, but I realized it's been over two months since I've posted about a furniture makeover! I think I'm well overdue to share what I've been up to lately in my studio. Things have been busy over here to say the least. I officially outgrew my original space and spent last weekend moving into a larger space. Luckily I was able to recruit a crew of strong guys (the husband included) which made the move much more seamless. What would have taken me days was literally finished within a couple hours. Most importantly, Kyle was still able to make his tee time! The move was also a good opportunity to reassess my work area, reorganize, and reenergize. It feels great to have a fully functioning work area that is clean and organized. The challenge now is just to keep it this way! There are still improvements I want to make, but it's a big upgrade that I'm super excited about. So there you have it... my excuse for letting so much time go by without a furniture makeover!

Spring Look Book

Spring Look Book

I was recently having a conversation with someone who follows my blog and she asked me if the pieces I write about each week are the only pieces I refinish and sell on my Etsy shop. The short answer. No. The long answer. Heck no! If you follow me on Instagram (and if you're not, you should be!), you probably already know that a lot more of my work makes it onto that feed than it does onto my blog. As much as I'd love to ramble on and on about all the excruciating details of every piece I refinish, I know it may be overkill. Plus, I have a limited amount of time I can sit in front of a computer, and all that writing would eat into my online shopping time!

Stained Bedroom Set

Stained Bedroom Set

If there is one thing I have learned (or more so, has been reinforced) over this past week, it's that things don't always go as planned. Actually, as I'm quickly learning, things rarely go as planned. So, unless you figure out how to roll with the punches and improvise, you've got a loooong road ahead of you, sista! To go into detail, but not too much detail...or as my best friend always says, "To make a long story short..." (but it's never short) here is the rundown... The pieces I'm showing off today really should have been done two weeks ago. They weren't. The kitchen mini-makeover that I wanted  to show off today isn't happening. Next week, fingers crossed. So whatever the reasons may be, whether it was the air was too cool and the sealer bubbled, or I was so excited to order a new rug that I forgot to measure the space (not the first time I've had a measurement error....you can read more about that here)...things are moving slower than anticipated over here! At the end of the day, life goes on, right?!

Emerald Green Chest

Emerald Green Chest

I don't know about you, but for me it's always this time of year when I'm just over Winter. It's cold, everything is dirty, my hands are permanently chapped, and above all else, my tan lines are officially non-existent. I start to look for any clue that Spring is just around the corner. And even if it means I have to create those signs, I'll do just that. So what better way to get out of this Winter rut than to do a furniture makeover in a bright, cheery color?!

If you haven't had your morning cup of coffee yet, don't bother. This dresser will not only make you think Spring, it will also give you a jolt of energy for sure! Go bold or go home. That pretty much sums up this furniture makeover.

MCM Dresser

Unless you've been living under an interior decorating rock, you've probably noticed that mid-century furniture is back...in a big way! Take a trip to your local Crate & Barrel, West Elm, or Room & Board, and it will take you all of 30 seconds to realize these stores are doubling down on this trend. Similar to fashion trends, whether you're ready for it or not, styles tend to go full circle, and if you stick around long enough, you'll see them repeat themselves. On a side note, I've been seeing waaay more bell-bottomed jeans in catalogs lately than I'm comfortable about admitting. I'm pretty sure if I'm seeing this trend for the second time around, there are people out there who are now on round three! Mark my words, I'm standing firm this time and will NOT succumb to this trend again! Anyways...back to furniture. While major retailers are making it clear mid-century furniture is totally hip again, personally, it's not what I gravitate towards. While I appreciate the style, I don't find myself buying it. However, that's the great thing about my job. I can spend quality time bonding with different types of furniture, getting to know them, learning about their quirks, deciding if we're compatible, and then ultimately saying good-bye...kinda like my ex-boyfriends!
