Designer Spotlight: Elizabeth Krueger Design

Designer Spotlight: Elizabeth Krueger Design

One of the perks about my job is the opportunity I get to constantly work with talented, creative individuals in the design world. There is nothing more inspiring and motivating than to see the work of others, and to watch how they can turn a blah, boring room into a space that is nothing short of stunning. I have been fortunate to be able to collaborate with some of the top designers in Chicago and to watch how they have transformed people’s spaces into their dream homes.

2019 Pantone Color of the Year

2019 Pantone Color of the Year

Do you feel like as you get older, there are fewer events in life that you really get excited for? For example, my 36th birthday came and went a couple weeks ago, and I barely remembered to celebrate. On the flip side, there are some events, that as I age, I seem to anticipate more and more…my monthly massage, 4th of July, and…the annual announcement of Pantone Color of the Year! While it may seem like insignificant news, in the design world, this one announcement has a trickle down effect that impacts major decisions in the years to come. So, when the Pantone Color of the Year is finally released, you can only hold your breath and cross your fingers that it’s a color you’re excited about and anxious to incorporate into your style. And in my opinion, 2019 did not disappoint.

Nursery Reveal

Nursery Reveal

At the time I'm sitting down to write this post, there is still no baby update. And at the rate things are going, I'm beginning to wonder if she's ever going to come. By the way she's kicking and squirming, I would think she couldn't get out of that cramped space soon enough, but it appears instead that she's deciding to soak up these last few days of peace and quiet before being drowned in kisses and slobber (yes, the dogs are eagerly awaiting her arrival as well)!

Six Decorating Tips to a Beautiful and Budget Conscious Home

Six Decorating Tips to a Beautiful and Budget Conscious Home

Over the past couple years one of my main focuses has been renovating and decorating our homes. I have spent more hours than I'd like to admit pouring over design magazines, home furnishing catalogs, decorating websites, and of course making the occasional shopping trip or two. Furnishing a home can be an expensive endeavor, and through this process, I've picked up some tips and have gained a bit of knowledge that I thought I'd pass along to you. Now if this were a post about tips to creating a beautiful home with endless funds, this would be a list of 60, and not six. Unfortunately, that's not the case over here, or in most situations.

Custom Made Coffee Table

Custom Made Coffee Table

It's been almost six months since we moved into our new house and I can say it's finally starting to feel like a home. Furniture that had been ordered months ago is slowly starting to trickle in and much to the dogs' disappointment, rooms are beginning to fill up, making their evening wrestling matches a bit more challenging. I've also been working on a handful of projects here that have recently finished up, and I can now proudly showcase in my home.

How Our Dining Room Came (is Coming) Together

How Our Dining Room Came (is Coming) Together

For those of you familiar with the site Everything But the House, that title is pretty fitting for our dining room, however it'd be changed to Everything But the Furniture Store. That pretty much sums up where our dining room furniture came from. Auctions, check. Estate sales, check. Craigslist, check. Seriously, where is the fun in walking into Pottery Barn, pointing to a dining room set, and declaring, "I'll have that one."?! C'mon, waaaay too easy. For those of you who have been following me for awhile now, you know that's not really the way things work over here, especially when you have the talented resources I have at my fingertips. Since moving into our new home, I think I've become my #1 client, taking advantage of the full gamut of services.

Blue & White Powder Room

Blue & White Powder Room

When we first moved into the new house, everything seemed PERFECT! It was turn-key move in ready and we weren't going to have to do a thing! However, now that we've been here for a couple months, I've had time to really dissect each room in excruciating detail. I mean, we're talking down to the type of lightbulbs used. It seems with each passing day, I manage to add five new items to the to-do list, while we are checking off items at a much slower pace. What initially looked like a fresh, blank slate quickly started to look a bit blah and boring. We needed color and texture and pattern and most of all...personality! I'm telling you now, it's going to be a slow process, but we'll get there, one room at a time. I decided to start small and first tackle the powder room.

Why I Will Never Stop Shopping at Thrift Stores

Why I Will Never Stop Shopping at Thrift Stores

A couple weeks ago I made reference that I had some exciting news to share, and because of it, there would be a lot of interior decorating inspired posts coming up. Well, here is the first of many! However, I should probably take a step back and fill you in on the details. After nine plus years of living in our condo, we finally decided it was time to say good-bye to high-rise living and move into a single family home. It was a big change, and there are many things we are missing about condo life - smelling what our neighbors were eating for dinner, waiting 10 minutes every morning for an elevator, receiving dirty looks when we let our dogs run around the lobby off leash, and being woken up at 3 am by our 20-something year old neighbors after a night out. (I'm laying on the sarcasm here if you can't tell)! Yep, it was a hard choice all right, but we were ready!

Bucktown Bachelor Pad...Part 2

Bucktown Bachelor Pad...Part 2

It's been a couple months since I kicked off the Bucktown project, and I thought we were due for an update. If you missed the first part, you can get up to date here. We've made some significant progress, and things are slowly starting to come together. We were hoping to have things wrapped up by late March so everything was settled by the time the baby arrived, but apparently the furniture industry doesn't work around due dates and when they say it takes 10-12 weeks for a couch to arrive, you wait patiently. So, let's take a look at where we are today.

Pillow Talk

Pillow Talk

If you've been following me for awhile, you know it's no secret that I have a slight addiction to throw pillows. I think the first time I openly admitted it here on the this blog was about two years ago. You can read all about that here. Yep, I know it, but honestly, I have no intention of doing anything about it. Through my decorating escapades over these past couple years I've learned a thing or two, and one of those things is the importance of throw pillows. After my last post of our great room renovation, I received a lot of questions regarding where the throw pillows came from. I decided this was perfect timing to discuss in more details the lovely topic of pillows!

Bucktown Bachelor Pad...Beautified! Part 1

Bucktown Bachelor Pad...Beautified! Part 1

I am really excited to be sharing this post with you today as it marks a new chapter for me. One of the main drivers that turned me to this whole furniture restoration business was my love for interior design. I don't know when it started, but I have always been drawn to beautiful interior spaces. When I was a little girl, I had notebooks full of my "blueprints" of homes I designed. I always wanted to buy the latest home decor magazines and remember sitting in my bedroom studying the pictures stressing over which home I should live in. (The struggles of an eight year old are rough I tell you!) In high school, I took an interior decorating class which I excelled at and proudly finished top of my class. Granted, this was high school and the majority of my classmates were probably just trying to fulfill some credit requirement and HomeEc was already filled. None the less, it was a proud moment...and made up for my C in Biology.

Guest Bedroom Makeover Reveal

Guest Bedroom Makeover Reveal

I'm not sure why it's taken me so long to show off this bedroom makeover. It was one of the first rooms we completed at the lake house, and I've shared bits and pieces of it over the past couple years, but have never showed it off in its entirety. I think it's because I like the room, but I don't LOOOVE the room. I have been waiting for some 'ah-ha' moment to really complete the room. Well that didn't happen, but instead I had a 'I have a whole new look for the room' revelation. I'm telling you, you never know when these thoughts are going to happen, but you have to cease the moment when they strike. For me, I was in the middle of a spin class and it was like a wave of inspiration came over me and I was suddenly enlightened with how this room should look. Spoiler alert, it involves wallpaper and a lot of blue and white. Big surprise there, huh?! So, before I go and tear up this whole room, I figured I better document how it looks in its current state.

Living Room Update - Custom Made Ottoman

Living Room Update - Custom Made Ottoman

Well, my upholstery guy strikes again! And in typical fashion, he did not disappoint! A couple months ago I shared my $10 Craigslist chair makeover. The upholstery guy at my studio worked his magic and completely transformed the chair. I was so blown away with the finished product and wasn't about to call it quits. All I could think about was what else could I have him make?! My mind was going full speed as I paced room to room, creating a list in my head of all the new upholstered furniture we now suddenly needed. Before this, I never would have thought we needed an upholstered headboard for the dog bed, but now...we absolutely do! (Ok, maybe that's a slight exaggeration, but you get the picture.)

DIY-ish Picture Matte

DIY-ish Picture Matte

If you ask my husband, I am the queen of finishing something 98%, then calling it quits. I will clean the kitchen spotless, yet somehow every time overlook the kitchen sink, leaving scraps of food laying in it. I don't necessarily mean to do it, it just somehow happens. As much as I'd like to argue against this fact, this last guest bedroom renovation has been no exception. I really should have done a room makeover reveal months ago, but instead have continued to stare at this large blank wall on one side of the room. Really, everything has been done (for so long now that I'm already itching for a new duvet cover), yet this one wall has remained bare. This time I can't plead the case that I forgot about it. Oh no, that big blank wall just stares you in the face every time you walk in. It was more so that I didn't exactly know what I wanted to do with the space.

Bedroom Update - Perfect Linens

Bedroom Update - Perfect Linens

This past week our Master Bedroom got a little upgrade. I teamed up with Perfect Linens, a bedding company who specializes in creating high quality bed linens. I don't know about you, but I tend to hang onto my bed sheets a bit longer than I probably should. So when I say little upgrade, it was more like a big (and much needed) upgrade! Unlike many bedding companies, Perfect Linens focuses solely on bed sheets, meaning they put all of their effort into ensuring they provide you not only with good looking bed sheets, but also with sheets that will hold up through many nights of sleep and runs through the washer.

Caroline's Bed & Breakfast Tour

Caroline's Bed & Breakfast Tour

Today I'm excited to share with you a project that has been in the works for quite some time. No, I'm not talking about another furniture makeover. Actually, I'm not even talking about myself today (weird, right?!), but instead, my aunt and uncle. It has been a lifelong dream of theirs to one day open a Bed & Breakfast. However, this isn't the sort of thing you just dream up one day and jump into. You know, there's that thing called life which often times gets in the way of our lofty goals and dreams. But, like any goal worth accomplishing, you work hard, you stick at it, and one day, your dreams become reality. Am I sounding like a cheesy motivational speaker here? (Sorry, proud niece moment!) Finally, last Fall everything started to fall into place and they packed up their bags, said good-bye to Indianapolis, and gave a great big "Hey y'all" to South Carolina. Come on in to Caroline's Bed & Breakfast and let me show you around!

Spring Outdoor Decor

Spring Outdoor Decor

With Spring just days away, I can't help but to turn my attention to the outdoors. The days are getting longer and the temperatures are slowly starting to creep up. All Winter I spent cooped up indoors working on home projects...decorating, painting, cleaning...getting our home in tip-top shape. I was feeling pretty good, like maybe I could finally sit back and relax. And then...it hit me. SPRING. Living in Chicago, Spring doesn't necessarily translate to backyard BBQ's and flip-flops, but, aside from making you realize that bathing suit season it quickly approaching, it also makes you remember that whole other part of your home that you have neglected these past four months...the outdoors.

DIY Cornice Board

DIY Cornice Board

I'll be the first to admit, when it comes to DIY projects, if it doesn't include a paint brush, it usually doesn't include me. I know my limits. Maybe the better way of putting it is I know what I like, and if I don't like it, I don't do it. If you remember back to my whole pillow fiasco, you may also remember if it requires a needle, I DEFINITELY shouldn't be attempting it. So, at least this time around I stuck with a DIY project that is 100% sewing-free!

Bedroom Makeover

Bedroom Makeover

I have a friend who believes in only using white duvets and pillows when decorating bedrooms. I'm warning you all right now, if you fall under this category, you may need to pour yourself a glass of wine before continuing to read this, because the amount of color and cheerfulness bursting out of this room is probably going to cause you a bit of anxiety! Tranquil. Serene. Calm. All words that do NOT describe the style of this bedroom. However, if you turn the dial up some...ALL the way up until it reaches the Fun/Cheerful/Happy level, that's a more fitting description of this bedroom's feel. If you follow me on Facebook or Instagram, you've probably seen sneak peaks of this makeover and know what's coming. For the rest of you, brace yourself.

Ready or Not...Here Comes Fall!

Ready or Not...Here Comes Fall!

Now that Labor Day is behind us, I guess it's officially time to turn our attention to what inevitably lies ahead...Fall! I feel like most people look forward to this time of year and welcome the change of seasons which is identified by wearing boots, drinking pumpkin spiced lattes and watching football. I'll be the first to admit though, I'm a Summer girl through and through and I don't get quite as jazzed up about the cooler weather. However, although I may not be looking forward to Fall as much as some, if it's coming, let's do it...and let's do it pretty! Here are some simple decorating ideas to get you in the spirit (sorry, pumpkin spiced lattes not included).
