Hardware Sources

Hardware Sources

It never ceases to amaze me how a little bit of paint can completely transform a piece of furniture. However, as dramatic of a change as it may produce, sometimes it's just not quite enough. I'll look at a piece and it will still seem a bit 'off'. This is when I know it still needs some fine tuning, and in most cases, that means updating the hardware. New hardware can have just as powerful of an effect as a rich coat of lacquer and can make a dated piece of furniture look fresh and modern. The biggest downside of new hardware often times is that it can come at a steep price. I get a lot of questions from readers/customers wanting to know my hardware sources. So, I thought I'd share some of my favorite sources with you today.

Grey Changing Table

Grey Changing Table

It's hard to believe, but it's been just over two years since I quit my 'day job' and dove into this new venture of refinishing furniture, blogging, decorating, etc. It took a bit of time to clean out all those cobwebs on the right side of my brain and flip the creativity switch on, but after two years, I think I'm going at full force. There are even some days that when asked what I do, I respond, "Oh, I'm an artist." Yeah...that may be a bit of a stretch, but I like to try it out for size. :) Over these past two years, I've also learned a lot about my customers. Who they are, what they like, buying tendencies, preferences...all that good stuff that I could probably analyze, create into graphs and charts, and report on...if only I still used the left side of my brain! Although I may not have a bar graph to prove this, I have learned a lot of my customers are expecting moms shopping for their baby's nursery. Since this demographic comprises such a large percentage of my customer base, I figured it was about time to market my pieces towards this group of people.

Spring Look Book

Spring Look Book

I was recently having a conversation with someone who follows my blog and she asked me if the pieces I write about each week are the only pieces I refinish and sell on my Etsy shop. The short answer. No. The long answer. Heck no! If you follow me on Instagram (and if you're not, you should be!), you probably already know that a lot more of my work makes it onto that feed than it does onto my blog. As much as I'd love to ramble on and on about all the excruciating details of every piece I refinish, I know it may be overkill. Plus, I have a limited amount of time I can sit in front of a computer, and all that writing would eat into my online shopping time!

An Oldie but Goodie

An Oldie but Goodie

As much as I love testing out new colors and techniques, I've been on a bit of repeat binder lately. If you follow me on Instagram, you may have picked up on this trend already. This shift has been brought on partly by choice, and partly because of custom order requests. The great thing about repeats is you know they are popular and in demand...otherwise I wouldn't be repeating them!

Restoration Hardware Inspired Dresser

Restoration Hardware Inspired Dresser

If you're anything like me, you wait all season for the quarterly Restoration Hardware magazine package to be delivered to your mailbox. You know the one I'm talking about, right? I refer to it as the RH phone book. It weights at least ten pounds and takes up your entire mailbox. On the days they arrive, my calendar miraculously will clear up, and I proceed to spend the rest of the day curled up on the couch hovering over these catalogs. It's slightly embarrassing to admit the level of intensity at which I scour through those pages and obsess about the new collections. I earmark pages, create idea boards, and by the end of the night, I have a brand new furnished dream home. And then I add up how much this newly furnished home is going to cost me. And then I cry.

Yellow Dresser

Yellow Dresser

Last week I started working on a new dresser. As usual, I first sat and stared at the piece, tossing around different makeover options in my head, then ultimately decided to paint it blue. I think I was on the second drawer when I thought to myself, "You know, just because you love blue and green, doesn't necessarily mean everyone else loves blue and green...maybe you really should try to mix things up a bit." Not even 30 seconds after that thought passed through my head, the guy who works in the space next to me glanced over, took one look at my latest project, and commented, "You're really into those blue and green pieces, huh?!" Well, there it was. Out in the open. I can't deny it any longer. I have a thing for blue and green. I proceeded to halfheartedly finish that dresser, deflated with the thought that I am totally lacking creativity and have fallen into a rut, but made a promise to myself...the next project was going to different! So, without further adieu, I give you...the YELLOW dresser!

Light Blue Buffet

Light Blue Buffet

This past week I started (and finished!) making over a buffet. This is actually the first buffet I have redone, but currently have a couple more in the works. Like I've mentioned before, the most challenging part of a makeover sometimes is settling on a color and style. It can be nerve wracking I tell you! The hours of sleep I lose over major life-changing decisions like this are countless! Ok, maybe I'm being a bit dramatic here, but it is definitely on my Top 10 list of "Things That Keep Me Up At Night"
