Holiday Inspired Buffet

Holiday Inspired Buffet

You may have noticed over the past several months my blogging has taken a nose dive. What I once did religiously every Friday without fail has now dwindled down to twice monthly...if I'm lucky. Rest assured, I'm not sitting around over here with this sudden new found time on my hands. There's several reasons for the decrease in blogging, and I feel that as a reader, you deserve to know what's going on. First, I'm starting to put more focus on other parts of my business...like that parts that actually make money. Yeah, it's an important one. Furniture sales in my Etsy shop have continued to grow every quarter and it's now at the point where managing the shop is taking up the majority of my time.  Second, if you follow me on Instagram, you've probably noticed the style of my furniture has evolved and a lot more of the pieces I'm creating are professionally sprayed with a lacquer finish. Honestly, I could blog about each and every one of these makeovers, but I think it'd get pretty boring and monotonous. However, if you're itching to see all the furniture I've been cranking out over here, my Instagram account is full of it!

Two Colors - Two Ways: Old Ochre & French Linen

Two Colors - Two Ways: Old Ochre & French Linen

Before I dive into my color lesson for the day, I want to take a quick minute to thank Remodelaholic. Several months ago I submitted an article to them sharing the details of our kitchen makeover (you can see my original post here). They responded back a couple weeks ago informing me they will be featuring the renovation project on their site. Woo-hoo! If you're not familiar with Remodelaholic, they have TONS of great ideas regarding home related topics, everything from minor home remedies to full-scale renovations Be sure to hop on over to check it out. Pretty cool stuff!

Ok, now onto a little bit of painting goodness. This past week I finished up two pieces using the same color scheme.

Old White Antique Cabinet

Old White Antique Cabinet

I'm not quite sure where the time has gone, but I realized it's been over two months since I've posted about a furniture makeover! I think I'm well overdue to share what I've been up to lately in my studio. Things have been busy over here to say the least. I officially outgrew my original space and spent last weekend moving into a larger space. Luckily I was able to recruit a crew of strong guys (the husband included) which made the move much more seamless. What would have taken me days was literally finished within a couple hours. Most importantly, Kyle was still able to make his tee time! The move was also a good opportunity to reassess my work area, reorganize, and reenergize. It feels great to have a fully functioning work area that is clean and organized. The challenge now is just to keep it this way! There are still improvements I want to make, but it's a big upgrade that I'm super excited about. So there you have it... my excuse for letting so much time go by without a furniture makeover!

A French Flea Market

A French Flea Market

For anyone who has any interest whatsoever in vintage decor, thrifted style, or finding unique pieces for your home or closet, you know flea markets can provide all of this, and often times at discount prices. Well folks, let's just say last week I met the mothership of flea markets. With almost 2,000 merchants (75% of those being antique dealers) divided into 15 different markets, I was on sensory overload! I spent the better part of my day walking around with my jaw dropped in amazement at the mass amount of furniture, home decor, and fashion accessories all brought together in one place. But, before I get too far ahead of myself, let's take a step back and start from the beginning.

Kitchen Makeover - Chalk Painting Kitchen Cabinets

Kitchen Makeover - Chalk Painting Kitchen Cabinets

You all remember that crafty little sister of mine? You know, the one who upcycled an old storage locker into a pantry? Yeah...that sister. Well, she's at it again! This time, she took on a slightly bigger project than just a storage locker. Like...an entire kitchen! Yeah, we just may be related. Seeing as both of our ideal weekends would include some sort of home project during the day followed by a glass (or two) of wine at night, I think it's safe to say we're cut from the same fabric. However, where we differ is our home decor style. While I am all about bright, cheery open spaces, Emily prefers a more rustic, cozy ski lodge look. Several months ago, she and her husband purchased their first home, a log cabin, giving them the idyllic backdrop for her to achieve her country style. While the space is great, and the house has a ton of potential, there are always things you want to change when you move into a new home. Since the kitchen is one of the primary living spaces, she decided this room was going to take priority.

Yellow Dresser

Yellow Dresser

Last week I started working on a new dresser. As usual, I first sat and stared at the piece, tossing around different makeover options in my head, then ultimately decided to paint it blue. I think I was on the second drawer when I thought to myself, "You know, just because you love blue and green, doesn't necessarily mean everyone else loves blue and green...maybe you really should try to mix things up a bit." Not even 30 seconds after that thought passed through my head, the guy who works in the space next to me glanced over, took one look at my latest project, and commented, "You're really into those blue and green pieces, huh?!" Well, there it was. Out in the open. I can't deny it any longer. I have a thing for blue and green. I proceeded to halfheartedly finish that dresser, deflated with the thought that I am totally lacking creativity and have fallen into a rut, but made a promise to myself...the next project was going to different! So, without further adieu, I give you...the YELLOW dresser!

Bedroom Makeover

Bedroom Makeover

I have a friend who believes in only using white duvets and pillows when decorating bedrooms. I'm warning you all right now, if you fall under this category, you may need to pour yourself a glass of wine before continuing to read this, because the amount of color and cheerfulness bursting out of this room is probably going to cause you a bit of anxiety! Tranquil. Serene. Calm. All words that do NOT describe the style of this bedroom. However, if you turn the dial up some...ALL the way up until it reaches the Fun/Cheerful/Happy level, that's a more fitting description of this bedroom's feel. If you follow me on Facebook or Instagram, you've probably seen sneak peaks of this makeover and know what's coming. For the rest of you, brace yourself.

Antique Washstand

Antique Washstand

When it comes to home decor, I've learned awhile back that if you really like something, you should just buy it. Even if you don't have the perfect space for it at the moment, you will eventually. Our closets, garage and basement can all vouch for me on that statement! You just have to be patient and know that eventually the time will come, and when it does you can reach into your bag of tricks and pull out the perfect piece! You don't ever want to fall into the trap of buying something because it's the right size for the space or the right color for the room or just simply a great deal...but you're not totally into it. If you settle on a piece because 'it will work' for one reason or another, chances are you'll be replacing it sooner rather than later. I'm a believer that you truly should love everything in your home. This is your sanctuary and the one place you have total control of, so why not surround yourself with items that make you happy? I guess I applied that same methodology when I found this vintage washstand at an auction several weeks ago. I knew it may not be the most practical piece, and it may be a more difficult piece to sell due to its lack of versatility, but I loved it! And I knew refinishing it would make me happy, so I bought it. Here is what it looked like originally.

Creative Pantry Solution For Small Spaces

Creative Pantry Solution For Small Spaces

While I have spent this past week working on some projects (but not actually finishing any) I thought it'd be a good opportunity to show off a project my sister just finished. You know how some people claim "they don't have a creative bone in their body"...well I'm pretty sure every bone...and muscle...and ligament of Emily's body is just oozing with creativity. Whether it's  painting, jewelry making, sewing, woodworking, or just general crafting, she does it! (Ok, maybe the woodworking is a bit of an exaggeration, but you get the picture!)
