Happy New Year! 2017 was definitely a memorable year over here on both a work and personal level. On the work side, Vintage Refined continued to grow, specifically gaining a greater presence in Chicago. I was lucky enough to work with some really great clients who continue to challenge our creativity and capabilities. In my personal life, we moved into a new home and I became a mother (to more than just dogs). Looking back, it's no wonder this year flew by. It's going to be a tough one to beat, but 2018 is already off to a great start. I've had some exciting news that I've been eager to share with you, and can finally do so. It's been one of my personal goals for awhile, and I can finally check it off my list; our lake house was featured in the magazine This Old House!

Condo Bathroom Makeover Reveal

Condo Bathroom Makeover Reveal

Oh yes, it's time for another renovation reveal today! To mix it up, today I am sharing a project we just finished at our condo. Since we purchased the lake house almost three years ago, the majority of our attention has been focused on renovating that home. The lake house is finally to the point where the projects are slowing down, it really feels like a comfortable and inviting space, and we can sit back and relax. Oh wait, I take that last part back. Sit back and relax? I'm still working on that one! Because we had been so focused on the lake house, our condo has been treated like the cast off, neglected step child. But, last Fall we agreed to spend the Winter shifting our focus back to some condo projects. Well, Winter became Spring, and now with Summer right around the corner, we finally have completed the bathroom renovation. Just in time to sit back and relax all Summer, right?! Doubtful.

Ok guys, this is a big one. In the words of Julia Roberts from Pretty Woman (which is, by the way, a Top 10 classic in my books), if you don't read this post, "Big mistake. Big. Huge." I can't really say why I haven't shared this bathroom makeover yet, seeing as it was one of the first rooms in our lake house renovation we completed. I think the main reason was because it is such a dramatic change, and I wanted to get it just right, so I kept procrastinating. Well seeing as some of the rooms are already on round two (or three) of renovations and makeovers, I guess I better get on this!

Bathroom Makeovers

If you've been following me for awhile, you know I'm no stranger to bathroom makeovers. Ok... that may be a slight understatement. It's probably more accurate to say that I live for a good all-out, down to the studs, bring out the sledge hammer kind of renovation. (And for the record, there's still more to come)! Over the past 1 1/2 years we've tackled everything from large renovations like our guest bathroom and powder room  in our lake house to smaller bathroom updates in our condo. Over the course of these renovations, I've picked up a thing or two about remodeling a bathroom, and have a better sense of how to make a room look nice while still allowing it to be functional. I want to share with you some lessons I've learned along the way, as well as some awesome makeovers other people have done. You can check out the details of these makeovers by clicking the board below, but I'll highlight just a few.

Guest Bathroom Makeover

Guest Bathroom Makeover

When we first bought our lake house, we relied heavily on the help of our friends and family for the initial work that needed to be done. It included everything from cleaning, demoing, painting, hauling stuff away...pretty much anything and everything! I thought it seemed like a great trade-off - we'd invite our friends up for a weekend of inhaling asbestos, exposing themselves to lead paint, stepping on rusty nails leading to tetanus shots, and in return, we'd buy them a round of beers at the local bar. Apparently they thought otherwise, and the lure of coming up for a 'fun weekend at the lake' quickly wore off. So, we resorted to Option #2 - a new guest bathroom. We figured if we were going to succumb our guests to hours of manual labor, the least we could do is give them a nice bathroom where they could enjoy 20 minutes of peace and serenity.

Custom Bathtub Frame

I'm just going to be upfront here - I'm sure what I'm about to write about could be a great DIY project and a fun way to spend a Saturday afternoon. However, the only thing I DIY-ed during this project was pouring myself a glass of wine while I watched in awe as the carpenters transformed a standard bathtub into something HGTV worthy. But, I did take notes during the process and asked a lot of questions, so I want to share with you how to create a custom looking built-in bathtub. This project takes a standard builder's grade tub and gives it a face lift, giving it the appearance of a custom-made tub.

Painting Bathroom Cabinets

Painting Bathroom Cabinets

We purchased our condo in the city five years ago. From the beginning, we knew it wasn't someplace we were going to live long- term, but was an ideal home for our current lifestyle.  With this in mind, I've been reluctant to do any major home renovations. It's hard to justify dumping money into a place you don't plan on living long-term. On the flip side, I also don't mind using our condo as a guinea pig for projects because if they don't turn out, again, I don't have to live with them long-term! This past week I turned my attention towards our master bathroom (and I use the word 'master' very lightly). I've tried to ignore this room and really had no motivation to make any improvements. I think that was due to a lack of inspiration. But I finally gave in and decided even if I'm not going to create a dream bathroom, I can at least give it a face lift. So, that's what I set out to do.
