Happy New Year! 2017 was definitely a memorable year over here on both a work and personal level. On the work side, Vintage Refined continued to grow, specifically gaining a greater presence in Chicago. I was lucky enough to work with some really great clients who continue to challenge our creativity and capabilities. In my personal life, we moved into a new home and I became a mother (to more than just dogs). Looking back, it's no wonder this year flew by. It's going to be a tough one to beat, but 2018 is already off to a great start. I've had some exciting news that I've been eager to share with you, and can finally do so. It's been one of my personal goals for awhile, and I can finally check it off my list; our lake house was featured in the magazine This Old House!

Bucktown Bachelor Pad...Part 2

Bucktown Bachelor Pad...Part 2

It's been a couple months since I kicked off the Bucktown project, and I thought we were due for an update. If you missed the first part, you can get up to date here. We've made some significant progress, and things are slowly starting to come together. We were hoping to have things wrapped up by late March so everything was settled by the time the baby arrived, but apparently the furniture industry doesn't work around due dates and when they say it takes 10-12 weeks for a couch to arrive, you wait patiently. So, let's take a look at where we are today.

Great Room Renovation Reveal

Great Room Renovation Reveal

Ok, so who's ready for a room makeover reveal? Like, a biiiig room makeover reveal! Because that's what you're in for today. I've been working up to this post for a looong time, and although there are other changes that will probably be made to this room, I think it's finally to a point where I can put my perfectionist tendencies aside and share the end product. Given this is the main room of the house, and it actually doubles as two rooms, I guess I can understand why it's taken me so long to write this, and why this post is going to be so long. If you're still here by the end of this post, God bless you!

Bucktown Bachelor Pad...Beautified! Part 1

Bucktown Bachelor Pad...Beautified! Part 1

I am really excited to be sharing this post with you today as it marks a new chapter for me. One of the main drivers that turned me to this whole furniture restoration business was my love for interior design. I don't know when it started, but I have always been drawn to beautiful interior spaces. When I was a little girl, I had notebooks full of my "blueprints" of homes I designed. I always wanted to buy the latest home decor magazines and remember sitting in my bedroom studying the pictures stressing over which home I should live in. (The struggles of an eight year old are rough I tell you!) In high school, I took an interior decorating class which I excelled at and proudly finished top of my class. Granted, this was high school and the majority of my classmates were probably just trying to fulfill some credit requirement and HomeEc was already filled. None the less, it was a proud moment...and made up for my C in Biology.

Guest Bedroom Makeover Reveal

Guest Bedroom Makeover Reveal

I'm not sure why it's taken me so long to show off this bedroom makeover. It was one of the first rooms we completed at the lake house, and I've shared bits and pieces of it over the past couple years, but have never showed it off in its entirety. I think it's because I like the room, but I don't LOOOVE the room. I have been waiting for some 'ah-ha' moment to really complete the room. Well that didn't happen, but instead I had a 'I have a whole new look for the room' revelation. I'm telling you, you never know when these thoughts are going to happen, but you have to cease the moment when they strike. For me, I was in the middle of a spin class and it was like a wave of inspiration came over me and I was suddenly enlightened with how this room should look. Spoiler alert, it involves wallpaper and a lot of blue and white. Big surprise there, huh?! So, before I go and tear up this whole room, I figured I better document how it looks in its current state.

Master Bathroom Renovation Reveal

Master Bathroom Renovation Reveal

It is almost bittersweet that I write this post today, as it wraps up the final bathroom renovation reveal for our lakehouse. However, considering we have now been in this home for over three years, I guess I should just get on with it already! In case you missed the other bathroom renovations, make sure you catch up on the downstairs bathroompowder room and guest bathroom.

Mud Room Renovation Reveal

"Okay, it's time." "You can do this." "It's just for a day, then things can go back to normal." These were the encouraging words I kept telling myself when preparing for this room renovation reveal. Why? Because it's the Mud Room. The room we enter through after being outside and dirty all day. The room we lock the dogs in when we're too lazy to clean them. The room we use as overflow storage. The room that has a never ending pile of laundry next to the washer. So, as you can imagine, the thought of getting this room photo-worthy was daunting to say the least. It meant I had to clean up our 'real-life' clutter and present it as a tidy and organized space. Trust me, I tried to photograph it 'as-is' and those pictures were less than appealing. I learned long ago I'm no June Clever when it comes to being a domesticated house wife.

Nautical Bedroom Makeover Reveal

I have to admit, the home renovation reveals are always my favorite to write. Maybe I write them more for myself than anything else. Even though I lived through this whole crazy process, it never fails, every time I write about one of our room makeovers, I am completely amazed at the transformation this house has made over the past 2 1/2 years. (You can check out other room reveals here...KitchenDownstairs BathroomGuest BathroomPowder RoomMaster Bedroom.) I promise you, when it comes to dramatic changes, this room is no exception. Seeing these old photos also makes me question my sanity just a bit. What we were thinking when we decided to take on such a huge project is beyond me. Saying that we were a bit naive at the beginning of this whole ordeal is probably a bit of an understatement.

Ok guys, this is a big one. In the words of Julia Roberts from Pretty Woman (which is, by the way, a Top 10 classic in my books), if you don't read this post, "Big mistake. Big. Huge." I can't really say why I haven't shared this bathroom makeover yet, seeing as it was one of the first rooms in our lake house renovation we completed. I think the main reason was because it is such a dramatic change, and I wanted to get it just right, so I kept procrastinating. Well seeing as some of the rooms are already on round two (or three) of renovations and makeovers, I guess I better get on this!

Staircase Makeover

Staircase Makeover

You know those projects that just seem to drag on, like a looooong time?! Every time you think about tackling it, you take one look, then decide otherwise, settling for something a bit more manageable. Pretty soon you're so used to looking at the half done project that you don't even notice your home looks like a construction site. Well, that's definitely how I would categorize this project. I was really holding out, hoping that raw wood staircases were going to take the interior decorating world by storm. I mean really, stain and paint are so over rated anyways! Every major design magazine would  be raving about this new trend, and I was going to be on the forefront of this style! So I waited, and waited some more. About a year into my waiting, I realized maybe I had mis-calculated this raw wood trend, and I would finally have to accept defeat and finish the staircase.

Custom Built Fireplace

Custom Built Fireplace

You all ready for some home improvement goodness today?! I hope so, because it's coming at ya! One room in our lake house I haven't shared yet is the Great Room. We're still waiting on a couple pieces of furniture until it's fully complete, but today I thought I'd share my favorite feature of the room with you - the fireplace. I think all rooms have features that, if executed properly, become the focal point of the room and really define the space. But if ignored, those features just become a missed opportunity. Here is what the fireplace looked like originally.

I have a friend who believes in only using white duvets and pillows when decorating bedrooms. I'm warning you all right now, if you fall under this category, you may need to pour yourself a glass of wine before continuing to read this, because the amount of color and cheerfulness bursting out of this room is probably going to cause you a bit of anxiety! Tranquil. Serene. Calm. All words that do NOT describe the style of this bedroom. However, if you turn the dial up some...ALL the way up until it reaches the Fun/Cheerful/Happy level, that's a more fitting description of this bedroom's feel. If you follow me on Facebook or Instagram, you've probably seen sneak peaks of this makeover and know what's coming. For the rest of you, brace yourself.

Bathroom Makeovers

Bathroom Makeovers

If you've been following me for awhile, you know I'm no stranger to bathroom makeovers. Ok... that may be a slight understatement. It's probably more accurate to say that I live for a good all-out, down to the studs, bring out the sledge hammer kind of renovation. (And for the record, there's still more to come)! Over the past 1 1/2 years we've tackled everything from large renovations like our guest bathroom and powder room  in our lake house to smaller bathroom updates in our condo. Over the course of these renovations, I've picked up a thing or two about remodeling a bathroom, and have a better sense of how to make a room look nice while still allowing it to be functional. I want to share with you some lessons I've learned along the way, as well as some awesome makeovers other people have done. You can check out the details of these makeovers by clicking the board below, but I'll highlight just a few.

Guest Bathroom Makeover

Guest Bathroom Makeover

When we first bought our lake house, we relied heavily on the help of our friends and family for the initial work that needed to be done. It included everything from cleaning, demoing, painting, hauling stuff away...pretty much anything and everything! I thought it seemed like a great trade-off - we'd invite our friends up for a weekend of inhaling asbestos, exposing themselves to lead paint, stepping on rusty nails leading to tetanus shots, and in return, we'd buy them a round of beers at the local bar. Apparently they thought otherwise, and the lure of coming up for a 'fun weekend at the lake' quickly wore off. So, we resorted to Option #2 - a new guest bathroom. We figured if we were going to succumb our guests to hours of manual labor, the least we could do is give them a nice bathroom where they could enjoy 20 minutes of peace and serenity.

Mud Room Storage Lockers

Mud Room Storage Lockers

It seems like it's been awhile since I've given you a lake house update...so here it is! We are wrapping up another round of renovations, and included in this round was the mud room. We waited until the end to refinish this room because with all the chaos going on in the rest of the house, it was nice to have a 'dumping ground' for our stuff we hadn't yet found an official spot for. I was actually a bit apprehensive to redo this room because that meant I may actually have to get organized (yikes)! However, now that it is nearing completion, I am so thrilled with the way it turned out that I am actually excited to get organized and make the room 'pretty'. Because lets be honest, decorating is the best part! There are still a couple finishing touches yet to be completed, however I want to share with you the custom storage lockers. I know I'm starting to sound a bit like a broken record when I say this, but a final reveal of the entire room is coming soon! As for now, here's a teaser of just one corner.
